Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891) - Artist Portfolio

Shibata Zeshin was Japan's most outstanding nineteenth-century lacquer artist and painter. The son of a sculptor, he was apprenticed to a lacquer maker and showed exceptional talent in that medium from an early age. An energetic and dedicated artist, he also studied painting in the naturalistic Shijo style and earned distinction during his lifetime for paintings that showed unusual creativity, including works painted in a special technique using lacquer.
